Why Contractors Can’t Afford to Ignore Yelp in the Age of AI
Yelp for contractors isn’t just a review site anymore. It’s the single source AI tools cite most when someone asks for a plumber, a roofer, or an air conditioning company nearby. Research covering more than 28 million AI answers found Yelp earned 3.4 times more citations than any competing local platform in the fourth quarter of 2025. If your profile is stale or your ads run on autopilot, you’re missing from the place a growing share of homeowners now start.
Picture the hottest Friday of the summer. The air conditioner quits. Ten years ago that homeowner searched Google and called the first three results. Today a lot of them describe the problem to ChatGPT or Google AI Mode and ask who to call. The AI answers, and it pulls that answer from somewhere.
Why do AI tools cite Yelp so often?
Trust, mostly. Yelp research with Morning Consult found that 65 percent of Americans had used an AI search tool in the past six months, but only 15 percent trust the results “a lot.” Most want to see where the information came from.
AI companies know this. When a question has money attached, the model reaches for a source the reader will believe. Yelp carries reviews, photos, hours, service categories, and structured business data in one place. That’s the kind of backup an AI answer needs.
The relationship got formal in July 2026, when Yelp licensed its reviews, ratings, photos, and business details to OpenAI. According to Search Engine Land, ChatGPT will be able to surface that content in local answers, and Yelp’s Request a Quote feature is coming to ChatGPT too. Yelp already licenses data to Apple Maps, and the OpenAI deal doesn’t stop it from signing others.
Your Yelp page is quietly becoming your storefront on platforms you never signed up for.
How much does Yelp actually influence AI answers?
More than most contractors would guess. Foundation Marketing and AirOps tracked citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode for six local platforms: Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, Angi, Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor, and Nextdoor.
In the fourth quarter of 2025, Yelp collected 512,680 citations. The Better Business Bureau came second with 149,710. Yelp beat all five competitors combined.
Two honest caveats. Yelp doesn’t win everywhere: the Better Business Bureau leads on ChatGPT, and Yelp barely registers on Gemini. But Google AI Mode and Perplexity account for roughly 95 percent of local citation volume, and Yelp dominates both. The study also compared only those six platforms. Google Maps wasn’t in the set.
The trend line is the part worth watching. Between September and November 2025, total AI citations across all sources roughly tripled. Yelp’s grew about nineteen times over the same stretch.

What does this mean for home service contractors?
The math works differently than traditional SEO, and this is where contractors tend to get it wrong.
AI doesn’t ask a thousand variations of a question about your trade. It asks a small set of the same questions constantly. The Foundation data found that on Perplexity, just 24 unique “plumber near me” questions produced 1,168 answers citing Yelp in a single quarter. For handyman services, four unique questions generated 332 Yelp cited answers across two platforms.
Category questions drive almost all of it. Non branded searches like “best plumber in Austin” accounted for 91 to 97 percent of Yelp citations from September through November 2025. Searches containing a brand name produced about 3 percent.
Read that again. Homeowners aren’t asking AI about you. They’re asking AI to choose for them. Your job is to be the answer to the few dozen category questions that matter in your market, not to chase hundreds of keywords.
What we see on contractor Yelp accounts
Running Yelp campaigns for plumbing companies and heating and air conditioning contractors surfaces the same five problems over and over.
- The service radius is set too wide. Contractors set it wide because wide feels like more opportunity, then pay for leads 45 minutes outside a profitable drive time. Trimming the radius almost always lowers cost per lead.
- The business category is wrong. A company listed under a generic contractor category instead of the specific trade category gets served to the wrong searches. Yelp’s taxonomy is narrower than most people assume, and picking the precise one changes who sees you.
- Leads sit too long before anyone answers. A homeowner requesting a quote is usually messaging three to five companies in the same session, and the first real reply tends to book the job. Weekend requests that sit until Monday are effectively donations to your competitors.
- The reviews all arrived at once. Yelp runs automated recommendation software that can hide reviews from accounts with thin activity history, so a stack collected all at once often underperforms a steady trickle.
- The license is not verified. Licensing rules vary by state, but the Yelp mechanic does not. Its Verified License badge is a blue shield that appears once Yelp moderators confirm your trade license is in good standing, and Yelp reports a 10 percent average lift in calls, clicks, and map views in the 30 days after a business adds it. It is a paid add-on and is not offered in every category or region.
One compliance note while you are chasing reviews. The Federal Trade Commission’s rule on consumer reviews and testimonials, effective October 2024, prohibits buying reviews, posting them as an insider without disclosure, and suppressing negative ones.

Should you run Yelp Ads yourself or through a partner?
There are three ways to buy Yelp Ads, and they are not equal.
- Self serve. You log into Yelp for Business and set it up yourself. Fast to start, and where most of the money gets wasted.
- Direct with a Yelp sales representative. Yelp’s own team sells you a package. Those reps work for Yelp, and your budget is their revenue. That does not make them dishonest, but nobody in that arrangement is paid to tell you to spend less.
- Through a certified Yelp advertising partner. Partner agencies get the Ads API and the Leads API plus direct partner support. None of that is available on a self serve account.
The difference isn’t strategy. It’s measurement.
| Yelp Ads through a partner | Yelp Ads self serve | |
|---|---|---|
| Call tracking | Full tracking with call recording | Limited, roughly 10 percent of mobile calls, no recording |
| Booking tracking | UTM tagging and dedicated landing pages | No website booking tracking |
| Promotions | Access to partner only offers | Limited, occasionally a free first month |
| Integrations | Ads API and Leads API access | No API access |
| Cost per job visibility | Reported alongside your other channels | Unknown |
That first row is the one that decides everything. On a self serve account you can see roughly 10 percent of your mobile calls, and phone calls are the business for a contractor.
If you can’t see the calls, you can’t count the leads. If you can’t count the leads, you’re guessing at whether Yelp is working. That’s how contractors end up saying they tried Yelp and it failed. Often it didn’t fail. It just went unmeasured, so it got shut off.
Operators are starting to revisit that verdict. On an Owned and Operated episode titled “Why Every Contractor Is Wrong About Yelp”, contractor John Wilson interviewed Katy Lightsey, Head of Services at Yelp, about why the platform gets dismissed.
Yelp now drives more than 10 million home service leads a month, which squares with the 125 million home services leads Foundation reported the platform generated in 2025. That volume didn’t vanish when contractors stopped paying attention to it.
What managed Yelp looked like for one HVAC company
An air conditioning company in Lewisville was in roughly that position. They were growing, hiring technicians, and needed more calls without expanding the budget. They came back to us specifically because they wanted to see the numbers.
We rebuilt the campaign from the profile up: complete business information, real photos, accurate service descriptions, tighter audience targeting, and ad copy written around the language homeowners actually use. Then we managed bids and pruned waste weekly instead of leaving it alone.

The client’s feedback was straightforward. “I am very happy. My Client Strategy Manager is very informative and engaged.”
The results:
- 1,375 percent increase in Yelp leads
- $22.31 average cost per lead
- 647 percent return on the service line
The full Yelp Ads results are documented in the case study. That cost per lead number is the point. It only exists because every call and form fill was tracked.
As a Yelp Platinum Partner and one of the top 5 Yelp advertising agencies in the country, Lokal Media House has access to the Ads API and the Leads API. That access is what makes real tracking possible in the first place.
If you want a look at whether Yelp is producing profitably in your market, our Yelp Ads management team will walk through your actual numbers with you.
Start with the work that costs nothing
Claim the profile, fill it out completely, add real photos of your trucks and technicians, verify your license, and answer every review and quote request quickly. AI systems pull from the same profile data homeowners read. A complete profile is the cheapest visibility you’ll ever buy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, particularly for emergency and fast turnaround trades. Yelp earned 3.4 times more AI citations than any competing local platform in the fourth quarter of 2025, which means it now influences answers well beyond Yelp’s own site.
Yelp licensed its reviews, ratings, photos, and business data to OpenAI in July 2026. ChatGPT will be able to surface that content in local answers, along with Yelp’s Request a Quote feature.
The two most common causes are an oversized service radius and the wrong business category. Both send your budget to searches that were never going to convert into profitable jobs.
Only partially on a self serve account, where roughly 10 percent of mobile calls are tracked and none are recorded. Full call tracking and recording requires partner level API access.
Within minutes during business hours. Homeowners requesting quotes on Yelp typically contact three to five companies at once, and the first substantive reply usually wins the job.
